Five percent of company’s profits support “Operation Smile”

Joanie’s Smiles is a new gourmet chocolate company based in Malibu, CA, produces high quality chocolate bars infused with organic teas. Company founder Joanie Freeman, trained at the California School of Culinary Arts Le Cordon Bleu Patisserie Program and a worked as a pastry chef for Wolfgang Puck’s Granita restaurant in Malibu.

Freeman says she created the company almost by accident. While drinking a cup of tea, she accidentally dropped a hunk of her chocolate bar into the cup. Since she is a classically-trained expert, she noticed that the fusion of the two tastes worked scrumptiously together. The smile that spread across her face upon this discovery inspired the name of this winning combination that grew into a thriving gourmet business.

To create the six flavors, Freeman experimented with high quality Belgian chocolate, organic teas in flavors such as herbal chai and rosemary hibiscus and fruits, including raspberries, cranberries, lemons, oranges, apples and coconut. She achieved a synergy of flavors to appeal to fine-chocolate connoisseurs, even those who are kosher, as the bars are certified as OU kosher. Six varieties of organic chocolate fusions are offered:

Cranberry-Ginger Tea bars are made with organic black tea infused with cranberries, natural ginger and milk chocolate.

Wild Raspberry Tea bars boast a blend of raspberries, organic apple bits, hibiscus, rose hips herbal tea and rich milk chocolate.

Coconut-Green Tea dark chocolate bars are made with organic clear Chumee green tea and natural coconut. They’re reminiscent of the famous coconut patties from Florida that had hand-stirred smooth chocolate covered with coconut.

Herbal Chai Tea bars are a dark chocolate blend of organic Amber Rooibos tea, cardamom, orange peel, cinnamon, ginger, fennel, allspice and black pepper and are a particular favorite of chocolate enthusiasts.

Rosemary Hibiscus Tea bars are an earthy, white chocolate blend of hibiscus flowers, lemon peel, orange peel and rosemary.

White Chocolate Pistachio-Green Tea bars are infused with organic green tea and all natural pistachio.

But Freeman is not just a successful businesswoman; she is also a humanitarian. Her company donates five percent of the its profits to “Operation Smile,” a twenty-year-old non-profit organization that sends teams of volunteer doctors around the world to operate on children cleft lips, cleft palates and other facial deformities. The organization creates smiles and changes lives. Joanie’s Smiles includes information about the Operation Smile on every bar.
